Policy on Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

Agrifood Research and Enterprise (Agrifood Res. Enterp.) recognizes that generative AI and AI-assisted technologies can support parts of the research and publishing process when used responsibly and transparently. This policy sets out the journal's expectations for authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher, and will be reviewed periodically as standards in this area continue to evolve.

For Authors

  • AI and AI-assisted tools must never be listed or credited as an author or co-author. Authorship implies accountability that can only be held by a human being.
  • Any use of generative AI in preparing the manuscript — beyond basic grammar, spelling, or punctuation checking — must be disclosed in a Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process, placed immediately before the References. See the Author Guidelines for the required format.
  • Where AI tools were used as part of the research process itself (e.g., data analysis, code generation), this must be documented in the Methods section rather than in the writing declaration.
  • Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the entire manuscript, including any AI-assisted content, and must independently verify all facts, data, and citations — AI-generated references can be inaccurate or entirely fabricated.
  • AI-generated images, figures, or artwork are not permitted for publication, given unresolved questions around their legal status and provenance — except where an image is itself the direct subject of a study specifically about AI, which will be reviewed case by case.

For Editors

  • Editors must not upload unpublished manuscripts, or any associated files, data, or images, into generative AI tools or external services, in order to protect author confidentiality and intellectual property.
  • Editorial decisions must be based on human editorial judgment informed by reviewer recommendations. AI tools must not be used as the sole or primary basis for an accept, revise, or reject decision.
  • AI-supported administrative tools (for example, similarity screening or reviewer-matching support) may be used transparently as an aid to the editorial workflow, but never as a substitute for human evaluation of scientific merit.

For Reviewers

  • Reviewers must not upload manuscripts under review, or any associated files, data, or images, into generative AI tools or external services. Submitted manuscripts are confidential, and doing so may infringe the authors' intellectual property.
  • Reviewers must not use AI tools to generate, draft, or substantially produce their review report, or to summarize or critique a manuscript on their behalf. A review must reflect the reviewer's own independent expert judgment.
  • Reviewers may use standard writing-assistance tools solely to improve the clarity or language of their own review text, provided no manuscript content is entered into the tool.

For the Publisher

  • Atas Meja may use AI-supported tools for limited editorial-support functions, such as initial similarity/plagiarism screening, provided their use is transparent and does not replace human editorial judgment or the peer review process.
  • The publisher does not use AI tools to generate editorial decisions, peer review outcomes, or published article content on the journal's behalf.
  • This policy is monitored against evolving publishing-industry standards and applicable regulations, and will be revised as needed.
